From hightech car manufacturing, consumer electronics, and telecom companies, to the worlds leading oil & gas, other mining, and infrastructure companies--the DS100 represents an aggregation of exciting and diverse set of businesses in the region. The Following is a brief profile of some of the most exciting companies from each industry sector represented.

In the coming issues, Dinar Standard will present more in-depth profiles and strategies of many more of these companies.

PROTON is perhaps one of the most exciting company on the DS100 list. Only 11 countries out of the 146 World Trade Organisation members can design and manufacture a vehicle from the ground up with the latest technology, meeting world standards. In 2002, Malaysia became the 11th country through PROTON.

Proton's own engine family, the Campro, commenced commercial production in January 2004 and powers the Gen.2 making PROTON a truly independent automotive manufacturer with its own cars and engines. Proton was ranked 11th by JD Power statistic 2004.

Investment in developing research and design capabilities includes the expertise of PROTON's wholly-owned subsidiary Lotus Engineering UK, one of the world's leading automotive engineering consultancy companies.

Dubai-based Emirates is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and has received more than 250 international awards for excellence since its launch in 1985. The airline flies to 77 destinations in 54 countries in Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. It was recognized with the Passenger Service Airline of the Year 2003 award as well as Air Transport World's 29th Annual Airline Achievement Awards .

Indofood is the largest instant noodles manufacturer and the largest flour miller in the world! It sells around nine billion packs of instant noodles annually under the Indomie brand.

Indofood is also the premier processed foods company in Indonesia, with leading domestic market shares for most of its products, including instant noodles, wheat flour, branded edible oils and fats, baby foods and snack foods. Indofood also produces food seasonings products. Koç Group, is a vibrant multinational conglomerate of 96 consolidated companies with dominat market positions in the automotive industry, household appliances and electronics, food, retailing, energy, financial services, hospitality and information technologies.

Following are three key subsidiaries which, as independent companies, would have qualified to be on the DS100 list themselves:

Arçelik - One of Europe's leading household appliances company with a $2.27 billion worldwide consolidated net sales in 2003.

Migros - A Supermarket/ Hypermarket chain of 484 stores with sales of $ 1.1 billion.

Aygaz - With over $1 billion in revenues in 2003, this is Koç Groups largest energy sector company. It is the market leader in domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

 

Saudi Aramco - Saudi Arabia

Saudi Aramco, headquartered in Dhahran, a fully integrated international petroleum company with the world's largest oil reserves - over one quarter of the global total. It is the world's #1 oil producer, supplying 11% of the world's oil demand. It extracts approximatey 8 million barrels a day, operates refineries, markets oil internationally, and distributes it domestically.

Recently, Saudi Aramco's $4 billion mega project, Hawiyah Gas Plant, has been named the Project of the Year by the Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's leading non-profit project management professional association.

 

Bank Mandiri - Indonesia

Bank Mandiri is Indonesia's largest bank in terms of assets, loans and deposits. Total assets as of March 31, 2002 were Rp 261,9 trillion, or around 24% of the assets in the banking system. Bank Mandiri is the most profitable bank in Indonesia and it is also one of the best capitalized banks in Asia with a Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of more than 27%, several times the 8% required by the Bank of International Settlements ( BIS).

Through the efforts of its more that 17,500 employees Bank Mandiri provides comprehensive financial service to more than 6 million corporate and individual customers as well as small and medium sized enterprises in Indonesia.

Country Awards: Owing to another good performance in 2002, Bank Mandiri, which has been in existence for only four years, has once again been selected by judges as Indonesia's best bank.

 

Orascom Telecom - Egypt

Orascom Telecom Holding established only in 1998 has quickly grown to become the largest and most diversified GSM network operator in the Middle East, Africa, and Pakistan.

With nine licenses covering the region, Orascom Telecom has positioned itself as a leading telecommunications conglomerate in emerging markets of this region. Starting with MobiNil in Egypt, Orascom Telecom continued to expand its network to cover Algeria, Pakistan, Tunisia, Congo, Chad, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and just recently acquired a license in Iraq. Its subscriber base has continued to grow to reach over 8 million subscribers. Iraqna was the last addition to the GSM family when on October 6th, 2003 Orascom Telecom was awarded the first license for the Central Region in Iraq.

Headquartered in Riyadh, SABIC is also one of the Middle East's largest non-oil industrial companies and among the leading petrochemical companies in the world. It ranks 11th in the world in petrochemical manufacturing, 3rd in polyethylene production and 6th in polypropylene. It also has leading market positions in glycols, methanol, MTBE and fertilizers.

SABIC was established in 1976 to add value to Saudi Arabia's natural hydrocarbon resources.  It's businesses are grouped into Basic Chemicals; Intermediates; Polyolefins; PVC and Polyester; Fertilizers and Metals.

This Istanbul-based firm is one of Turkey's largest construction firms with 14,000 employees. The company 's principal activities include the construction of industrial and social buildings, thermic power plants, motorways, property development, and the leasing of office buildings. It has projects in Turkey, Russia, Ethiopia, North Africa and Central Asia.

TNB is the largest electricity utility company in Malaysia with RM60.0 billion worth of assets serving over six million customers throughout Malaysia. TNB's core activities are in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. To date, TNB remains a major player in electricity generation which forms a significant part of the Group's diversified range of business activities.

The TNB Group has the largest generation capacity in Malaysia of 10,481 MW. Currently, the TNB Group has a complete power supply system, including the Natinal Grid. TNB, through its subsidiaries, is also involved in the manufacturing of transformers, high voltage switchgears and cables. It is also a provider of a range of professional consultancy services. Interestingly, TNB also offers higher education through its university - University Tenaga Nasional.

The company, with one of the largest market capitalization on the KLSE, stands out as one of the most successful privatisation efforts by the Malaysian Government.
