While Egypt ranks among the bottom 30 countries in the world in ease of conducting business, according to the recent World Bank/IFC report Doing Business in 2006, recent reforms made to customs and trade procedures are seen as bold steps, driving the biggest improvements in the Doing Business indicators for the country.  In the list of top 12 reformers for 2004, Egypt came in sixth place.

Minister of Investment Mahmoud Mohieddin has recently declared all public-sector companies for sale regardless of whether they are profitable or not. Mohieddin said out of about 170 companies, 47 will be offered for sale during the current fiscal year. He added that the strategy is aimed at keeping up with global governance trends that charge the state with the role of regulation and the private sector with production.

Emaar Misr for Development recently signed a LE 68 million contract to buy about 245 square meters along kilometer 29 on the Cairo-Alexandria desert highway, opposite the Smart Village, to set up a number of development projects, including a hotel and luxurious housing units, as well as a shopping center.

In late September, the Turkish-Egyptian Business Council held its meeting in Cairo.   The meeting was chaired by the Turkish Industry & Trade Minister and Egyptian Industry & Foreign Trade Minister Rasheed Mohammad.
