City Profile

The capital city of Tunisia lies near the ruins of the ancient city of Carthage. In more modern times it hosts hosts the regional headquarters of the Greater Middle East Partnership Initiative and is home to over 20% of Tunisia's overall population within the greater Tunis area.

Most major European and Middle Eastern airlines make stops at Tunis-Carthage airport which has the capacity to handle almost 5 million passengers per year.

The Greater Tunis area is also home to seven of the almost 30 industrail zones which were established by the Tunisian governemtn in the late 1990s. In addition, with assistance from UNIDO, the Greater Tunis area is home to three technology parks. The Elgazala Pole of Communication Technologies is already in operation while the Technopark of Borj Cedria and the Technopark of Sidi Thabet are under development. The Elgazala Pole of Communication Technologies is home to a number of industry leaders including Alcatel and Ericsson. Just four mles from the Tunis Carthage airport is the Science and Technology Park officially known as the Parc Technologique des Communications de Tunis. The park serves as a conduit for communication between universities, the private sector, and those involved in research creating a positive atmosphere for investment and business.

From November 16th - 18th Tunis will host Phase 2 of the World Summit for the Information Society (WSIS), under the aegis of the UN. This meeting promises to enhance the prospects for ICT in Tunis even further than previous efforts of the Tunisian government.

Tunisia’s biggest shopping mall, “Tunis City”, covering an area of 55,000 square meters and expected to create 1,300 new jobs recently opened its doors in the capital.
