It is home to the Alexandria Stock Exchange, which returned over 100% on investment last year, and a public free zone where companies can establish storage, manufacturing, processing, and repair operations.

The Alexandria Stock Exchange took part in a high level meeting conducted under the auspices of the International Chamber of Commerce on regulation and corporate governance standards.

Given the need for private sector development and the support of new business development, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), recently signed an agreement with Egypt's Governorate of Alexandria and the country's General Authority for Investment and Free Zones to help simplify the registration of new businesses in Alexandria.

The Alexandria Mineral Oils Company (AMOC) made its initial public offering late last month of a 20% portion of company equity. Citigroup is currently the lead adviser on the privatization of Bank of Alexandria, Egypt's fourth largest state-owned bank. Small business grows in Alexandria as well. Amr El-Abd, aged 26 and a local of Alexandria, runs the Entrepreneurs' Business Forum (EBF), an NGO based in Alexandria which seeks to bring together successful and aspiring entrepreneurs and aims to become a center for entrepreneurial knowledge.
