Grameen - Jameel
A partnership
between microfinance pioneer Dr. Mohammed Yunus's Grameen Foundation
(GF) and the Abdul Latif Jameel Group to alleviate poverty in the Arab
world. An estimated 59 million* people in the region are living
on less than US $2 a day.
Fatina Ta’awa (shown left), a shop
owner in Morocco, is a success story of this initiative. She used to
sell carpets, chickens and rabbits out of her home before she received
her first loan from the microfinance partner - Al Karama. Today,
Fatina is on her eight loan cycle, 5000 MAD. She used the money to add
two telephone booths to her shop, increasing her business and offering
communication services to her village.
